Enjoy the International Beer Day with Co.Mac
Summer season calls for relax and a good beer, to drink with friends or in front of TV, while watching big sport events such as the Olympic Games, in Paris till next August, 11th. Unsurprisingly, the International Beer Day is celebrated during summertime and this year, in particular, the designated day is Friday, August 2nd, which is also a good time to take a look at facts and figures on the market of our favourite drink, in Italy and around the world.
A consolidated market, with the rise of low-alcohol beers
According to the 2023 annual report of Assobirra (the national association of brewers and maltsters), beer production during 2023 has reached 17.4 million hectolitres, a slight reduction if compared to previous-year record, although higher than the pre-pandemic period. The same trend has been experienced for consumption, where 21.2 million hectolitres are the second highest figure ever.
Beer therefore is confirmed as a very important beverage in the habits of Italians, besides being consumed moderately and responsibly.
A further interesting consideration comes from the rise of low-alcohol or alcohol-free beers that accounted for 1.86% of total consumption in 2023, as Assobirra declared.
Appreciation for such beverage is also confirmed by the survey from BVA Doxa for Centro informazione birra, the permanent monitoring centre from Assobirra who analyses trends of the sector.
Low or alcohol-free beer is known by more than 80% of those interviewed, with 60% of them having tasted it. Loved above all by Generation-Z young people, this is seen as an alternative beverage to “traditional” beers, but without the alcohol adverse effects. That is why it is considered suitable for socializing, for those on a diet and of course when drinking and driving.
This same trend can be observed worldwide – according to the IWSR research institute (International Wine and Spirits Research) 2024 report, the global volume of the alcohol-free beer market has grown by 6% compared to previous year.
